It is used to digitally distribute and manage games from all genre's. Steam digitally distributes many titles that are also sold on retail shelves, and offers a discount on price in exchange for the lack of physical packaging and box art.

There are varying opinions as to the worth of steam, some users aggressively object to being forced to use steam in order to play their favorite games, others are satisfied that steam can keep their games up to date with minimal effort on their behalf.

Steam requires a broadband connection and can cause dial up users a lot of frustration due to its system of locking a game until it has been updated to the latest version.
